If you are using our paint on the surface they are made for, surfaces such as render, cement, bricks and lime render then our paints are very durable as they are absorbed into the wall, allowing the surface to breathe.
However you just love the look of our paints and want to use our paints on walls that are already painted with conventional paints, they will look the same but they will not be scrubbable, if we were to make our paints scrubbable then we would need to change the nature of our paint to include chemicals we don’t wish to use or to introduce into our environment, and they would loose the unique look they have.
Choose our paints because you love the way they look and the way they don't harm our environment.

All You Need To Know
What is Bauwerk lime paint? How does it work?
Our paints work differently, we make them with clay, minerals and beautiful natural pigments. Bauwerk Paints cure by taking carbon dioxide from the air, a truly wonderful and natural occurring process. We manufacturer them by utilising a simple elemental cycle of earth, fire, water and air.
Unlike conventional paints which dry as a plastic film and require many toxic chemicals to make them work, Bauwerk Paints are made from natural materials. Our paint is different to conventional low or zero VOC paint, which is usually made from plastics but with one toxic part removed and leaving all the rest.
The many unique natural characteristics of our paints include features such as its natural anti-fungal properties which unlike other paints, require toxic fungicides to stop them going mouldy.
Millions of micro-crystals are formed when our paint cures, creating a unique luminosity and depth of colour.
You can paint without fumes, wash-up and disposal is safe and non-polluting and we leave no toxic chemicals in the environment in the production of our paints.
What is the correct surface for Bauwerk lime paints?
Bauwerk Lime paints are perfect for all masonry surfaces, like render, bricks, mud brick, strawbale where it works best as it's absorbed into the wall leaving a breathable surface that is protected by the natural properties of the paint. It's okay if your wall is already painted or is made of gyprock or plaster, use our undercoat/sealer Bauwerk Unter if you want to hide any imperfections, then paint the way you like it best.
We don't recommend it for architectural wood such as doors and trims but it can be used on ply and pine that is unpainted, also for decorative purposes such as unpainted garden furniture if a 'limed' look is desired.
How durable is it?
If you are painting natural surfaces such as render or bricks our paints are wonderfully durable as they are absorbed into the wall. If you are painting our paints on already painted or sealed walls, they are not as scrubbable as other paints. Because our paints are made from natural materials, they are not made to be indestructible, its part of there beautiful make up. We accept limitations: the absence of the usual chemical cocktail will not give you a wash/scrub/bulletproof surface, we prefer a clean environment. All you have to do is whoosh on another coat, its quick and easy, it can be repainted anytime. Each coat makes it more durable and best of all more beautiful, every coat just enhances what is there.
My walls are already painted with conventional paint, can I use Bauwerk Paint over them?
Yes, provided that the old paint coat is stable and not flaking, is free of dirt, dust, grease and soluble salts. If there are different substrates in your wall ie. different materials – you may see a slight variation in the colour or ghosting. To avoid any unwanted ghosting or patching apply Bauwerk Unter. Gloss or semi gloss walls should be sandpapered – interior walls then should be undercoated with Bauwerk Unter.
Do I have to use Bauwerk Unter?
We have tested to Unter to work with our paint, we can only recommend paints we have tested ourselves. Because our paint is natural it will not mask any imperfections or variations in the underlying wall. You can just live with the imperfections if you like, especially if they are just small, but if they are large like a prepped new gyprock wall or a large patch from repair then it is essential that your wall is sealed with 2 coats to prevent ghosting. If you choose to use other good quality sealer undercoat, we would recommend a site trial before commencing.
I have opened my paint tin, the colour of the paint does not match the colour of my colour chart
It is completely natural for lime paints to look much darker when in solution. As the paint dries, you will find that the paint will become much lighter and will dry to the desired colour. We always recommend the use of sample pots for an accurate colour representation on your particular surface and light conditions.
I have opened my paint tin and have stirred my paint, it looks really thin not like other paint.
Yes that is okay, our paints are thinner it makes them easier to apply, they are not made out of plastics like conventional paints which are sticky, our works best thin as they are absorbed into the wall that way.
I would like to use lime paints, but have found them always too chalky/powdery?
Powdering usually occurs when paint is too thickly applied. The best results are being achieved by thin applications rather than thick coats. Bauwerk Paints cure by taking carbon dioxide from the air, a truly wonderful and natural occurring process. Unlike conventional paints which dry as a plastic film and require many toxic chemicals to make them work.
Maintenance – Can Bauwerk Paint be painted over?
Bauwerk Paints need no stripping when redecorating an existing coat of Bauwerk Paint. It is a simple matter of applying 1 or 2 coats as a refresher or to change colours. In fact it is one of the easiest ways to give your house a makeover and with each application your walls become healthier and more beautiful.
How long will Bauwerk Paints last in comparison to other paints?
You can expect a similar life expectancy to that of other quality brand paints provided that the paint is applied in the manner recommended by Bauwerk. The pigments used in Bauwerk exterior paints are mineral based, colourfast and UV stable. Bauwerk Paint will never blister or peel off.
I have finished painting and I have white patches on my wall, whats wrong?
This is due to overpainting, i.e. applying the paint too thickly, our paint must be applied by spreading the paint as far as it will go without over working it, if the paint is not applied in this manner, the lime part of the paint sits on the surface and appears as white patches. To fix this, wait a full day and then apply another thin coat making sure you spread the paint as far as it will naturally go.
I have tried to patch my wall in area that I missed and now I can see it as a big patch, how can I fix it?
Once you have finished a wall don't be tempted to try and patch any sections or areas you feel you missed, get it with the next full coat to avoid patching, but if you have done that, you will need to repaint the wall.
I have had some leftover Bauwerk Paint and it looks thicker than when I used it last. Can I add water to it?
Leftover paint should be stored in an airtight container. We do not recommend that you adjust the consistency of Bauwerk Paint in any way.
